Well, it's the day after Christmas, early in the morning before everyone is up. I've been reflecting on the week and this great opportunity I've had to spend the weekend with my family in beautiful Tahoe California.
We came up on Friday afternoon, a day early because there was a pretty big storm on the way. Apart from the drive being nearly 5 hours longer than expected, it was uneventful. When we arrived it was dark, but there was only about 3 inches of snow.
Over the next 36 hours it snowed well over 2 feet. I went outside and tromped through the snow to take some pictures and it was thigh high...and I'm a pretty tall person! It is so beautiful here! What a beautiful, quiet, and still place to spend the holidays with my family. We've already made some really fun memories!
The Sunday before Christmas we went out to go ice skating and got caught in a really bad storm. We skidded and almost hit another car, but we slid into the bank instead. Unfortunately, that meant we got stuck and had to dig ourselves out with a shovel, all during a whiteout storm. After we got un-stuck, another car got stuck nearby. We passed our shovel to him and wished him luck digging himself out too. Then they closed the pass so we got stuck for a few hours waiting for the pass to open. It was a crazy adventure! I am so grateful we were all ok and no one got hurt. We were cold and not in snow clothes, we spilled the hot chocolate jug in the car, and we had to use the frozen port-potty on the side of the road, but we made some good memories while stuck in the car together.
On Christmas eve we took family pictures (to come soon!) and built forts in the snow. Then we opened our traditional Christmas PJs and read the Christmas story Cajun style and Texas style. It was pretty funny! Then we ate roast beast and fudge and watched the grinch.
On Christmas day we had stockings but mostly just opened gifts that we made for each other. It was a simple Christmas focused on being with each other. It did involve playing with BB guns in the snow, and that usually makes everything more interesting! For dinner we did a Christmas themed murder mystery game (it was the head elf whodunnit...) and laughed a lot at the costumes and accents.
I feel blessed to be in this beautiful place with my family, taking each day as it comes, focused on what is truly important. I love being surrounded by so much beauty and stillness. I hope each of you have had a memorable Christmas season and have had the opportunity to spend it with the people who are important to you.
Theres more pics on my FB page! Hopefully there will be more to come. https://www.facebook.com/AlannaRenePhotography
