FREE Villa by the Sea

Ok, maybe not completely free...but in L.A. parking doesn't count because you have to pay for parking pretty much everywhere. True fact.

I suppose we could have parked down the street and used quarters, or gotten ambitious and parked in some neighborhood 4 miles away and walked. I guess our lazy American butts just decided to fork over the $15 bucks for parking :)

Anyway, I have now lived in L.A. for 4 years and I never knew there were 2 Getty museums. I mean, the Getty is only one of the more famous "free" places to visit here. Well, apparently there are 2 of them. This weekend we went to the Getty Villa near Santa Monica.

If only this were my backyard....(drooling)

It was beautiful

The entire place was a tribute to the Greeks and Romans. It almost felt like I stepped

More statues. The fabric actually looked like it was flowing and draping.

These are a bunch of reliefs carved with the most intricate stories.

I was in awe at the detail of the sculptures. Ricky and I sat for a while (mostly because my feet were killing me) and looked at this row of heads...yes... heads. They were some of the most artfully crafted portraits. There was one that I could not stop staring at. It was so life like. You could almost see the pain in that man's brow. I felt so grateful to be able to appreciate the mastery that was these sculptures. They were so haunting, almost as if the artists themselves were trying to tell their story to us despite the many years that divide us. What kind of lives did they live? Did they find joy creating such art, or was it simply a way to get a paycheck and feed their families?

Isn't this the most amazing face? There is so much emotion! I honestly couldn't believe that someone carved this out of marble...wow.

Isn't this room beautiful? I love wide angle lenses!!
